NEWS & INFORMATION
Information Regarding the Double Pass System
The driving cost of a Solar Telescope is the Etalon and the
Blocking Filters. The cost of an Etalon increases quickly with diameter. The
theory was to pass the beam thru the same etalon twice producing a reduced
bandpass system without the added cost of a second etalon. In order for this to
be a worthwhile solution, the cost of the filters systems needed to double pass
should be less than the cost of an additional etalon. Initial feedback clearly
indicated that this would be the case.
When building the double pass system prototype at the end of last year they had
utilized high quality "one off" filters and components because they were not in
the production phase...
The double pass system worked and they was very pleased.
During the process it became clear that the filters designed around the etalon
had to meet high tolerances for anti-reflection and polarization, etc. RFQ's and
specs were sent out to various filter suppliers requesting pricing on these
items. Orders were placed based on these specifications and they waited for them
to arrive......
It wasn't long before test runs came back demonstrating that the filters could
not be made to the tolerances. Samples were delivered and the production model
was assembled.
Lunt Solar Systems was not impressed.
Etalon Systems
An Etalon is manufactured to the highest of optical specifications. Their
etalons are designed to have a theoretical bandpass of 0.6 Angstroms.
There are many other factors that come into play with regard to how well an
etalon system will perform. Placing an etalon on the front of a telescope is
almost ideal. The light from the Sun is essentially collimated and at normal
incidence, the etalon will perform close to theoretical. (0.6A)
Placing an etalon internal to an optical system introduces a few complications.
Although collimating systems are used to optimize the beam, it is not possible
to truly collimate the beam 100% across the entire aperture of the etalon.
Optimization is done at 60-80% of aperture diameter to avoid a small "sweet
spot". Although optimized, the etalon will be compromised slightly due to the
off axis beam angles and the bandpass will increase slightly. In their case the
theoretical value is increased to ~0.7 Angstroms. The trade off is cost. A less
expensive system due to the smaller etalon with a slightly higher bandpass.
Double Stacking
(The reasons for double stacking vs single have not changed)
The best views of the Sun are undoubtedly seen thru a dual etalon system. The
reduction in bandpass from an estimated 0.8 Angstroms to 0.5 Angstroms just seem
to bring the Sun's surface to life. Larger apertures on a good seeing day
usually result in a WOW! from those who are lucky enough. Adding a second etalon
to an existing etalon is not quite as simple as it may seem. Both etalons need
to be brought on line (tuned) and both need to be tiltable such that all ghosts
are eliminated.
Ideally the transmission curves should overlap perfectly when on band to provide
for the best possible resolution and contrast.
An easy way to estimate the bandpass of a double stacked etalon system is to
multiply the bandpasses together.
Two front mounted etalon systems with 0.6 Angstrom ideal bandpass would have
double stacked value of ~0.36 Angstroms. (great for surface detail). The actual
value depends on how well "matched" the etalons are and the accuracy to which
they are fabricated. Double passing an internal etalon would have been ideal
from a match point of view.
However, the best bandpass that can be achieved is still the multiple of the
actual bandpass which in this case would be ~0.5A.
Why the switch to Double Stack vs Double Pass?
After several months of testing and re-specifying it turns out that the double
passing will not provide the image results that they wanted. As a result they
have decided to add a factory matched second etalon to the system despite the
additional cost. The addition of a second etalon at the factory maintains the
initial bandpass specification and increases the functionality of the system as
a whole.
The LS60T/DP/DS
Having designed and manufactured Solar Telescopes for many years, factory
personnel are very aware of what they feel is an acceptable system. Although the
initial indications were that the 60DP would provide excellent images for the
price, they cannot manufacture the 60 in this manner if they feel there is a
better solution for the money. (simply put).
Although the etalon system was functioning at <0.55 Angstroms, the residual
errors in other filters washed out a lot of the detail.
The LS60T/DP (now DS) will be double stacked from the factory.
The LS60T/DP will utilize unobstructed etalons.
It will have the added functionality that it can used both single and double
stacked.
In single stack mode the bandpass will be ~0.7 (guaranteed <0.8A) for prominence
viewing.
In double stack mode the bandpass will be ~0.5 (guaranteed <0.55A) for surface
detail.
Pricing will remain the same thru July 31st.
But as you can imagine, the addition of the second
etalon will require a price adjustment after this date.
The LS200T/DP/DS
The LS200T has also been redesigned for production.
The system will maintain its original bandpass specifications.
The system can be used in both single and double stack modes.
The system will still be available with the CaK option.
However, due to the removal of the beamsplitter from the
system, the mirror will be switchable from the Ha side to the CaK side. The
system will now utilize an etalon cavity design that was currently being aligned
toward the rear end SCT system that was not set to come out until next year. The
cavity design utilizes unobstructed etalons.
Lunt Solar Systems was hoping to have the system demo at RTMC but unfortunately
there just isn't enough time to get the mechanics completed.
Pricing will not be effected and is valid thru July 31st 2008.
Upcoming additions to the site will include:
• Image Gallery.
• More product announcements. (Yes! they're not done yet)
• Soon to be available hats, shirts etc.
• Access to the Lunt Solar Sytems online Solar System. (they're in sunny
Tucson for a reason)

have the option of either a 1.25" or 2" blocking filter, at no additional
charge.
Because the LS100 has an estimated bandpass of <0.75
Angstroms it is capable to providing high contrast views of both surface and
edge detail. Adding an additional etalon system (double stack) will reduce the
bandpass to ~<0.55 (dependant upon scope) allowing for higher resolution viewing
and/or imaging.
Included:
• Main Filter
• Blocking Filter
• Transport case

LS160FHa Filter System
Introducing the LS160 Hydrogen-alpha system. Lunt
Solar Systems is offering the 160mm aperture (no central obstruction) integrally
tuned etalon for use on any customer supplied refractor. This is an H-alpha
Single Pass Front Mount Etalon System, which starts off including the B600 blocking filter
as standard and provides full disk images on telescopes up to
540mm focal length. Larger blocking filters
suitable for longer focal length telescopes are also available options. You also
have the option of either a 1.25" or 2" blocking filter, at no additional
charge.
Because the LS50 has an estimated bandpass of <0.7 Angstroms it is capable to providing high contrast views of both surface and
edge detail. Adding an additional etalon system (double stack) will reduce the
bandpass to ~<0.5 (dependant upon scope) allowing for higher resolution viewing
and/or imaging.

FINDERS
Sol Searcher
Part # TV001
IN STOCK $29
"I can't find the Sun!" sounds funny. However, the
Sun is tricky to find in a properly filtered
telescope, and you don't ever want to chance a direct gaze, let
alone a magnified image of it.
The Sol-Searcher is the safe and easy way to find the Sun. It is
absolutely safe since you
don't look through Sol-Searcher, you look at it. The aperture acts
as a "pinhole" which projects
an image of the Sun on to the 1/4" translucent "screen." This
screen can be viewed from either
side. Simply move your scope until the Sun's image is centered on the screen and
the Sun will
be in the eyepiece's field of view.
